Chatting our way through Corona, with Ritual Unions

The cool af Ritual Unions are scheduled to return to Rock the Frock Essex - for a limited time only - later this month. We are very, very, very much hoping that our Trunk Show (running 27th May - 7th June) is able to go ahead.

Designed & crafted in Berlin, these daring designs are perfect for brides looking to push boundaries on their wedding day. When we saw their new Collection, 'Shine', we KNEW that we had to get it in the boutique for you all to try!

We were keen to chat to Ritual Unions founder & designer, Karin, about the collection and, as it happens, that's conveniently fallen in to our 'Chatting our way through Corona' series. Every cloud, ey?

Rock the Frock: Hi Karin! Sending love from the UK - thank you for your time and answering our questions! First question is the most important; how are you? I hope you are keeping safe - in the UK we've just completed our 6th week of 'lockdown' and hoping to be out the other side soon! How are things in Berlin?

Karin: I'm really good. The situation has of course a lot of downsides, but there are a few pretty amazing upsides too. I'm trying to stay open-minded and take everything as it comes. I can't change it, so I might as well make the best out of it.

In my particular case the best thing about it is slowing down - something I was always afraid of before but now I'm embracing it. I'm taking more time for my personal life and I'm not stressed at all. I needed the crisis to recognise the chances in taking things slow.

I'm grateful that me and my family have not been directly affected by the virus physically and I feel deep condolence for everybody who is. I am aware of how bad the situation is but we need to focus on the positive to not get crazy altogether.

How has lockdown been for the Ritual Unions team & how has your working day changed?

K: It felt like from one day to the other all appointments got cancelled, and inquiries stopped. Deadlines changed, weddings got postponed, fabric deliveries were delayed, trunk shows got postponed... a lot of uncertainty and flexible planning every day, facing worst case scenarios. But, brides order their dresses 6 months ahead, so my to-do-list is always super long and it was good to have something to focus on. We had a rush order of protective coats for the dentist office next door and produced a few masks for friends and family. We were trying to handle all that while staying calm and positive like everybody else I guess.

Can you tell our brides in the UK a bit about Ritual Unions and what your brand stands for?

K: Ritual Unions stands for modern, edgy bridal wear, sustainability and couture craftsmanship. We combine a cool, modern look with high end finishing and quality lace and silk from Europe. Every dress is handmade in our own atelier.

A special characteristic about Ritual Unions is diversity. I would almost say, we have a dress for every type of woman, though you'll recognize the Ritual Unions DNA in all of them.

We absolutely LOVE the latest designs & we're so excited to have the collection in the boutique! Do you have a favourite piece from the collection

K: Thank you, I'm excited, too! You can't ask a mother what's her favorite child! All pieces have their own little something. The key pieces obviously are the Jen gown and the black Shadow gown which stand by themselves. But the separates are not in their shadow at all! Especially for fashion-forward brides, separates gain more and more importance because you can play around with them and the styling. In this collection I loved to experiment with volume, sleeve details, folds, stand-up collars and textures.

What was the inspiration behind this new collection and how does it differ from previous collections?

K: The subject I was working with at that time was the main focus on the inside. Instead of following other opinions, inspirations and influences from outside, I focused on what comes from inside of me. Even if there are edges and flaws I might not like, it is a part of me and I didn't allow myself to judge those parts. It was a very liberating process and I want to encourage woman also to listen to who they truly are and shine from inside.

Is there anything you'd like to tell the Rock the Frock brides who are looking forward to seeing your pieces in the UK?

K: Yes! Congratulations! You got engaged, you found your soulmate, how amazing is that??? You are a beautiful human being and you're gonna look like a super babe on your wedding and nothing can stop you from feeling blessed, loved and happy. You deserve it!
